On a Roll: Cigars as Wedding Favors

Belly up to the cigar bar

Some people raise a glass when celebrating, others reach for a stogie. San Juan Cigars president Jason Farr is one of those latter types, although when he first tried his hand at rolling cigars in 2010, he didn’t intend to become an expert, let alone start a business. Five years later, Farr uses tobacco sourced from the Dominican Republic, Cameroon, Nicaragua and Ecuador—as well as from Cuban plants grown in Connecticut—to create six cigar varieties and a slew of limited-edition blends at his company’s Kenmore headquarters. The goods make for a killer groomsman’s gift (especially when paired with a cigar tool such as a cutter or a punch, Farr says), but for an extra-special touch, book a cigar-rolling table at the wedding itself. For venues within a 50-mile radius of its headquarters, Farr’s team will arrive early and roll the smokes in front of guests for $500 plus the cost of the cigars.
