Kelly Chaney and Evan Slater met over the beer keg at a mutual friend’s graduation party in 2005. The only problem was that Evan, an instrumentation technician, was living in Los Angeles at the time. As fate would have it, Kelly was heading down to LA that summer for an internship at a graphic design firm. Reunited, the duo spent the summer going to music shows, eating burritos and getting tattoos. After a 10-month, long-distance relationship, the couple (and their long-haired dachshund, Wizard) settled in Ballard, and on December 29, 2011, Evan, 30, proposed to Kelly, 29, at the Grand Hyatt Seattle downtown.
Since the couple had been together for seven years, it was important to them that their wedding be relaxed and fun for everyone. They chose the Georgetown Ballroom as the venue for both the ceremony and reception—the perfect backdrop for their 1920s speakeasy theme. “With the amazing exposed brick of the ballroom, we stuck with natural tones and accents of black,” Kelly says of the décor, “and chose soft candles and big bouquets of fluffy white flowers.” Wedding planner Steven Moore of Sinclair & Moore helped arrange the flowers, which included hydrangeas, garden roses, anemones and ranunculus. He also added a creative touch, bringing in couches with custom pillows to provide more seating for guests.
Kelly worked with designers at Cicada Bridal to create her form-fitting satin dress, creatively using beaded belts as shoulder straps. Her bridesmaids wore navy, sequined flapper-style dresses from Nordstrom, kicking convention by sporting black motorcycle boots instead of heels.
Echoing the casual tone, the reception was catered by Veraci Pizza and Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream; the ballroom’s easily accessible back patio allowed the trucks to pull right up and start feeding hungry guests. Although the couple’s beloved dog couldn’t make the big day, he was still present in spirit—both as an image on the menus (wearing a festive top hat), and as the night’s namesake signature cocktail, The Wizard, a bright, punchy mix of vodka, grapefruit juice and grenadine. After the wedding, the couple continued to enjoy tropical drinks, this time poolside at the Grand Hyatt Resort and Spa on Kauai, where they honeymooned for a week.
