Catherine & Ronny

Sept. 12, 2009 at The HideAway at Camp Korey in Carnation

Ronny Bell first spied his future bride at a farm picnic in the tranquil Sammamish Valley. He admired her beauty, how she carried herself. She liked his sense of humor. He emailed. She replied—six weeks later. But their first date, at Sambar, was a revelation.

“We pretty much knew right away that we were destined to spend our lives together,” says Ronny, 37, of Catherine, 29.

He’s a founder of cause-marketing platform iDeal Network. She’s working on a master’s degree in public administration. Both are passionate about local food (Ronny owned former local produce delivery service Pioneer Organics; Catherine is the daughter of Gretchen Garth, head of local education farm 21 Acres). The Capitol Hill residents desired a wedding that would highlight the Northwest, its glorious landscapes and its local bounty.

Camp Korey, on historic Carnation Farm, was a natural fit. The couple liked the nonprofit—it’s a retreat for children who live with chronic or life-threatening illnesses—and were glad to help spread the word of its mission to their guests. The camp’s HideAway offers sweeping Cascade views, 817 woodsy acres, guest rooms and a pool—ideal for the weekend of fun they planned for their 180 guests, complete with a catered barbecue, s’mores, a kickball match and a tour of nearby Full Circle Farm.

“It was an opportunity for us to stop playing the role of bride and groom and just hang out with friends, just enjoying each other’s company,” says Ronny. Those were the best memories, adds Catherine: “The moments where I got to actually connect with people.”

The couple married in a garden ceremony beneath a lush, greenery-filled chuppah in honor of Ronny’s Jewish heritage. Afterward, the merrymakers drifted into the HideAway’s Hippodrome pavilion, festooned in shimmering pastel linens and abundant flowers, for organic, sustainable Northwest cuisine.

The newlyweds and two dozen loved ones lingered around a bonfire until the wee hours, savoring a starlit sky on the late-summer night.
