Emily & Steve

Sept. 26, 2009 at the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame in Seattle

The experience music project might not suit every bride’s vision, but for Emily Manning, 33, and her groom Steve Rayson, 43, the dramatic museum was the perfect crescendo for a story that began 10 years ago when the pair met at a nightclub. After a long-standing friendship blossomed into romance, Steve popped the question in January 2009 with a fireside proposal at their Redmond home.

Emily, an artist, soon began pulling swatches in lime, cobalt, lavender and teal to create a modern-rock-meets-sci-fi theme for their September celebration at the EMP, accented with vibrant lighting and hammered metals. “We both love music and science fiction, and so do our guests, so we wanted to thank them by throwing a fun, memorable party,” says Emily. The rock-’n’-roll tone was set with concert ticket invites designed by the bride; Steve, a software engineer, acted out his rock star fantasy, prepping in the Green Room before making his debut for the ceremony. With her 11-year old daughter, Marnie, as a bridesmaid, Emily walked down the aisle with twinkling white stars cascading down a 70-foot-high LED video wall. A friend who got ordained for the occasion officiated the traditional ceremony.

“Afterward, we had a few seconds in our own little world behind the back curtain where we looked at each other with so much love,” Emily says. “We both said, ‘We did it!’”

Guests mingled throughout the museum’s exhibits during cocktail hour. A friend acted as DJ, playing up-tempo music. Tables were themed around favorite science-fiction movies, including Star Wars and Star Trek, with movie quotes (“Live long and prosper”) on the place cards–great conversation starters. Food included pre-ceremony hors d’oeuvres, sit-down dinner, a dessert bar (including Theo Chocolate favors) and a late-night snack of mini burgers and fries. Needless to say, everyone danced well into the night.

About the Photographer: “We loved that Emily and Steve chose vibrant colors and that details were handmade by Emily. It was an eclectic mix of classic glam meeting science fiction; very Tarantino and hip.” —Bryan and Melody Valiant, Amore Studios
