Jennifer & Eric
February 25, 2012 at Sole Repair on Capitol Hill

An adventurous duo cap off their February romance with each other—and food—with a sumptuous fete at Capitol Hill’s Sole Repair.
Even though Jennifer Hellmann, 32, and Eric Beus, 31, worked at the same PCC natural market in Fremont for a year, they didn’t connect until she transferred to the Green Lake location. At her going-away party on February 25, 2007 (and in front of all their coworkers), Jennifer decided Eric should be her boyfriend before giving him an impromptu tipsy kiss. It worked. “She swept me off my feet,” Eric says with a laugh. On their next day off, the pair went on a 12-hour romp around Capitol Hill starting with pho and ending sweetly with another kiss.
Fast-forward four years to another romantic February day: Jennifer found herself staring down the coastal cliffs of Volcano National Park on Hawaii’s Big Island and kicking at the loose soil, making a ready-to-propose Eric a bit nervous. “She said, ‘Don’t you want to take the plunge with me?’” Eric recalls. “And I said, ‘I want to take the plunge with you in life’” and pulled out the Green Lake Jewelry Works ring that he snagged just two days before they left for their annual anniversary getaway.
The adventurous bride and groom took that final plunge in front of 50 of their closest friends and family members at Capitol Hill’s dapper Sole Repair Shop a year later, marking the fifth anniversary of the day they met. The duo knew the revamped 1900s shoe repair facility was their dream match the moment they walked in—from the reclaimed-wood interior, swanky loft and killer in-house bar to Feed Company Catering’s delectable dish offerings, which satisfied both the vegan bride and not-so-vegan groom. Jennifer added subtle color with touches of chocolate brown and robin’s egg blue, complementing succulent greens grown by the couple, pussy willow silvers from Pike Place Market and burlap table runners fit for the venue’s urban chic vibe.
After thoughtful readings of poems and quotes close to the couple’s hearts, they proceeded with their handwritten vows. Just before they exchanged rings, Eric’s father, Curtis Beus, who officiated at the touching ceremony, took a moment to step back and, with hand over heart, told his son how proud he was—a moment the Maple Leaf couple cherishes as the most memorable of the day.
Sole Repair transformed flawlessly into the lively reception venue, with tables brought in to accommodate a feast befitting the two food-obsessed lovers. (Jennifer is a store director for PCC, and Eric, the deli coordinator.) “When not at work, we talk about food, read food blogs, go to cheese shows, trade events and wine tastings,” Eric says. Local star chef Scott Staples and his Feed Company Catering team delivered an encore-worthy round of appetizers, ranging from rabbit liver pâté with oyster mushrooms and pickled cipollini onions to parsnip soup in pistachio cups. Guests dined on Bibb lettuce salad with roasted squash, truffle mashed potatoes, ratatouille or roasted chicken, and later snacked on macaroons, vegan shortbread dipped in chocolate and lemon curd tartlets.
At night’s end, friends and family showered the newlyweds in lavender before they escaped in a town car to their Olive 8 weekend suite, where handmade truffles and a miniature wedding cake awaited to cap off the magical night. A few weeks later, Jennifer and Eric jetted off to Italy and France for a month-long romantic European honeymoon.
