Julia & Damon
Real Weddings
Damon, a freelance web designer, was so captivated by a sword-balancing belly dancer he saw at Burning Man Festival in 2004 that when he was back home surfing Tribe.net (a social networking site) and saw a picture of Julia doing the same, he contacted her immediately. Co-director of Troupe Hipnotica Tribal Belly Dance and co-owner of Hipnotic Apparel in West Seattle, Julia, 36, apprehensively agreed to a drink. A few months and a trip to New Orleans and Ireland later, she was sold. In 2008, Damon, 37, proposed at a lake near Mount St. Helens, and the couple was the first to marry in the Tête-à-Tête gallery at the Frye. The Zen pair included natural elements such as succulents, feathers and rocks, which complemented the room’s Eastern elements, including the Sufi poem stitched into an elaborate rug. Their festive soiree included a performance by Julia’s dance troupe and Jameson whiskey cupcakes served to commemorate their trip to Ireland. Julia and Damon live in West Seattle with their 4-year-old son, Cedar.
Favorite moment: “My favorite moment was when Damon read his vows and I looked over and saw his 92-year-old grandma Skyped in from New Mexico [on a laptop] looking very content,” Julia says.
