Seattle Times cohorts (she’s a former reporter; he’s a sports columnist) Karen Gaudette and Jerry Brewer met at the Asian American Journalism Association’s Lunar New Year Banquet in 2007. By July 2008 Jerry planned to propose at the Olympic Sculpture Park at sunset, but the weather didn't cooperate. After giving up looking for a break in the rainy clouds, he proposed in their living room, and then whisked the bride away to Mona's near Green Lake, the scene of their first date and where a dozen close friends were waiting to toast them.

Karen and Jerry’s wedding combined elegance (Bastyr’s glorious five-story chapel) and cultural traditions (traditional Japanese taiko drumming to reflect Karen’s heritage) with fun and fantastic food by Ravishing Radish, which had guests coming back for not only seconds, but third and fourth servings. Rev. Randy Rowland–the voice of the Seattle Seahawks at Qwest–officiated, and Sugar! Cake Studio and Crème de la Crème provided the bride’s cake (banana) and groom’s cake (red velvet, that featured Jerry’s alma mater, Western Kentucky University), respectively. In lieu of favors, the couple donated to the University District Food Bank.

Karen and Jerry married on the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, trusting it will translate into a long and happy marriage.
