Laura & Dan

Oct. 15, 2011 at Fireseed Catering on Whidbey Island

Laura Griep and Dan DiZazzo like to joke that they met in wonderland, although this “Wonderland” was the name of a neighborhood dive bar in D.C. (where they lived at the time), instead of an idyllic fairyland. Still, the gardening-loving pair were magically drawn to each other, dating six years before landscape architect Dan hid an engagement ring in their West Seattle backyard pea patch on Valentine’s Day in 2011 for Laura, a community college administrator, to unearth. Renting a giant beach house on Whidbey Island, the couple gathered family and friends for an October wedding weekend, starting off the celebration with a beach barbecue and bonfire on Friday, lighting and releasing paper lanterns into the night sky. The next day, the two said “I do” in the garden at nearby Fireseed Catering before enjoying a locally sourced meal of rustic roasted vegetables, fresh salmon and pear pastries. Organized by different herb names, tables were decorated with organic bouquets and stamped silver spoon table markers “planted” in pots. After dancing until the wee hours, the couple headed back to the beach house to enjoy a three-day respite on the sunny shores.
