Lena & KJ

Jan. 16, 2010 at Tacoma's Life Center Church

KJ and Lena had to wait two-and-a-half years for this smooch as husband and wife. That’s how long it took for their immigration paperwork to be approved once they got engaged in July 2007. After hundreds of weekend visits between his home in Tacoma and hers in Vancouver, B.C., they finally got their happy ending on January 16, in an intimate ceremony at Tacoma’s Life Center Church. They first met in November 2006 when KJ and Lena, along with their parents—Christian immigrants from Iraq—happened to be at the same dinner party. “I knew from the moment I saw Lena that I was going to marry her,” says KJ. But for Lena, not so much—she said the words he dreaded: “Let’s just be friends.” He didn’t give up, though, and from the looks of this photo, snapped in one of their favorite Seattle locales, Pike Place Market, he succeeded. KJ, a captain and physician in the U.S. Army, and Lena, a pre-dental student at Pacific Lutheran University, live in Tacoma.
