Linda & John
John Clyman and Linda Chu randomly met through a mutual friend at downtown Seattle’s beloved (but now-gone) Union Square Grill. It was love at first sight. That night, the pair talked until the restaurant closed.
Wedding bells were inevitable, and stunning, handcrafted announcements were sent in custom-made Thai silk boxes that Linda helped design (WhiteAisle.com created the motif and did the printing), hand-lettered and individually hand-tied with ribbons. Rather than using the traditional “double happiness” Chinese characters, the couple inscribed on their invitations the words, qian shou, which literally translates as “holding hands.” Qian shou is a Taiwanese term that colloquially refers to one’s wife, whom the husband cherishes and forms a lifelong bond. This term, which became our theme, also acknowledged my heritage.
For the ceremony and reception, they wanted to share the beautiful Northwest views with beloved out-of-town friends and family, and so chose the Penthouse at Canlis restaurant, “where the views are accompanied by the most amazing cuisine and impeccable service,” Linda says. “I can’t say enough good things about their professionalism.” For friends who could not make it to the wedding, the couple sent them pictures they took at various Seattle landmarks, such as the Pike Place Market, Olympic Sculpture Park, and of course, The Lusty Lady.
Nisha Kelen of Fleurish did a breathtaking job decorating the Canlis Penthouse. She came up with the idea of earth, water and fire, which perfect fit the couple’s theme of qian shou. Kelen decorated the space with countless floating candles and orchids arising out of water and pebbles for a simply beautiful and unforgettable celebration.
