West Coast, Best Coast: Vibrant Wedding at the Seattle Yacht Club

A Ballard couple shares their love of laughter—and of Seattle—with guests from near and far

It was love at first sight for Liz Hunter, and West Keller when they met at Capitol Hill’s Vermillion in July of 2010 where Liz worked as a bartender. But the couple didn’t see each other again until they were reunited at a Halloween party, where Liz, now 30, was a zombie prom queen, and West, now 35, was Lady Gaga—not a likely match, but sparks flew nonetheless. Two years later, after a Christmas Day engagement, Liz, a New Jersey native and West, who is from Oregon, set out to build a wedding weekend that put family and friends traveling from afar (21 states and five countries, to be exact) center stage.

Step one? Find a venue that showcases the best of Seattle. The couple chose the Seattle Yacht Club for its proximity to the water and capacity for a large group. Step two? Throw a celebration that makes every minute of guests’ travel time worth it. The couple chose a coral theme, both the color and the animal. “The first inspiration was that it’s the best summer color,” says Liz. “Everyone looks good in it, it matches people’s smiles and tans, and looks good with so many other colors. Guests were treated to a Northwest-inspired menu, which included a raw bar; a late-night rolling-chair conga line; and a full-moon farewell.
