Eco-friendly Bridal Gowns by Kimmi Designs
Recycled fabric gets new life in Kimmi Designs' eco-friendly wedding gowns

In the hands of local wedding dress designer Kim McCormick, a discarded tablecloth is just the beginning of an ethereal gown. Her vision and talent for reworking antique laces into modern designs earned her top honors in the bridal design category in sister publication Seattle magazine’s 2011 Seamless in Seattle fashion design competition last June. A former fashion rep for several sweater lines, the Columbia City resident first started designing daywear for her Kimmi Designs line four years ago, but the romantic vibe of her body-conscious silhouettes and delicately draped, lacey embellishments naturally led to many requests for wedding dresses—and a new calling. After scoring tablecloths, bedspreads and curtains at local Goodwill stores and estate sales, McCormick breathes new life into vintage fabrics, sewing them into flattering new shapes ranging from tea-length, full-skirted frocks to flowing floor-length goddess gowns, often layering creamy lace pieces and sheer organzas as the final layer to each confection. Not only will your conscience rest easy, thanks to her eco-friendly approach, but your wallet will, too: Her custom-made designs range from $250 to $1,000. Brides hoping to order custom gowns should place their order four months prior to the wedding, but ready-made frocks are also available at McCormick’s online Etsy shop, Kimmi Designs.
