Great Engagements
One local groom's creative way of proposing

Nikki Woodhouse, 28, was flipping through a magazine when she saw an idea she just loved: creating picture frames from the covers of old hardback books. She pointed it out to her boyfriend, Ryan McLaughlin, 29, who casually agreed, “It looks like a cool idea.” Six months later, after a “mellow and ordinary” dinner at home, the couple sat down to exchange presents for their one-year anniversary. Ryan nervously waited as Nikki ripped off the wrapping paper. There, cut into the cover of a vintage book aptly titled Closing the Ring, Ryan had fashioned a frame similar to the one she had loved. In place of a photograph, Ryan had printed “Nikki will you marry me?” Stunned and overjoyed, Nikki accepted. The Auburn-based couple wed on September 6, 2008, at Top of the Market in Pike Place Market.
